Advisory

Fostering Character, Connection, and Well-being

At Leadways School, we believe in nurturing the whole child. Our daily 20-minute Advisory Program serves as a cornerstone of our educational approach, providing students with a consistent, supportive environment where they can develop the social-emotional skills and character strengths needed to thrive both academically and personally.

What is Advisory?

Advisory is a daily 20-minute period where students meet in small groups with a dedicated teacher-advisor. This time is specifically designed to foster meaningful relationships, develop essential life skills, and create a sense of belonging within our school community.

Benefits of Our Advisory Program

Research shows that effective advisory programs yield significant benefits:

  • Improved Academic Performance: Students with strong SEL skills demonstrate better academic outcomes and higher engagement.

  • Enhanced School Climate: A focus on character strengths creates a more positive, supportive school environment.

  • Reduced Behavioral Issues: Students develop better self-regulation and conflict resolution skills.

  • Greater Emotional Resilience: Students build coping strategies that help them navigate challenges with confidence.

  • Stronger Teacher-Student Relationships: Regular, meaningful interactions foster trust and connection.

  • Decreased Anxiety and Stress: Mindfulness practices provide students with tools to manage difficult emotions.

  • Increased Sense of Belonging: Students feel more connected to their school community.

Social-Emotional Learning

Students engage with evidence-based practices that develop self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. These competencies have been proven to improve academic performance and overall well-being.

Character Strengths Development

Students learn to identify, understand, and cultivate their unique character strengths such as perseverance, kindness, gratitude, and curiosity. This approach helps students recognize their inherent value and the positive contributions they can make to their community.

Mindfulness Practices

Students learn practical mindfulness techniques that help them manage stress, improve focus, and develop greater self-regulation. These skills enable students to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively to challenges.

Community Building

Advisory groups create a "home base" within the larger school environment, fostering strong peer relationships and a trusted connection with an adult advocate who knows each student well.
